1940 Census Eye-Opener

40 days til the 1940 census no. 33 “Photograph of Terminal Island Japanese fisherman on his boat America.” It is known that the data collected during the 1940 Census helped the Federal government identify Japanese immigrants following the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Months earlier, as relations between Japan and the U.S. became strained, American authorities began to gather data about the immigrant communities near military sites.   This photograph was taken by Naval Intelligence Officers from San Pedro, California, 1941. From the records of the Eleventh Naval District (RG 181) at the National Archives at Riverside.
